Review: The Wedding Singer is a sassy and fun musical

I have never seen the film version of The Wedding Singer, but if it’s anything like the musical currently on stage in Auckland, it would be a triumph.

The theatrical incarnation of the story follows a similar plot. A young, handsome singer gets jilted at the altar, and his world comes crashing down. He becomes angry, cynical, and no longer able to perform.

The core of this story is a simple tale of love, loss, and redemption. It’s a fairy tale of sorts wrapped in rock and roll music, and set in a working class environment.

While the plot is entirely predictable, the journey to its inevitable conclusion is incredibly satisfying. That’s because the music, the energy, and a very dynamic and talented cast meld to make a brilliant show.

Right at the heart of it is the insanely good Christian Charisiou as Robbie Hart, the hopelessly romantic lead. He has an infectious energy and charm and manages to bring just the right amount of soul to every tender ballad or full on rock song he performs.

His fellow performers don’t let him down. Elise Mcann as his love interest Julia brings a delightful sweetness that complements her on screen best friend and vixen Holly, played by the talented Romy Vuksan. Rounding out the core cast were very memorable performances by Stephen Mahy  (Glen Guglia),  wall street Ashlee Hammerin (Linda), Haydan Hawkins (Sammy), and hilarious scene-stealer Susan-ann Walker (Grandma Rosie).

This entire production from the cast, through to the music, orchestration and choreography were top notch. It’s a sassy, confident production that is incredibly fun to watch and brings with it a sense of joy and contentment.
