Review: Smashed – The Nightcap

There is something rather special about a Spiegeltent and if you’ve ever been in one you know that you can never quite be sure what you are about to experience. Tonight in a brand new tent the cabaret/cirque show Smashed – The Nightcap debuted and true to form, it was a mix of the fabulous and risqué.

Hosted by the effervescent Victoria Falconer a mix of talented cast members delivered song, contortion, fun and music. Falconer herself is quite a performer. She can belt out a tune with aplomb and knows how to flirt and cajole an audience. Her interactions with the crowd are dripping with innuendo and perhaps the least provocative of her lines “music is the ultimate lubricant.” It’s all good fun and she knows how to work it.

Her fellow stars included the exotic Tynga Williams making her international cirque debut in this show with flair and poise; drag queen Elektra Shock who provided a great deal of muscular energy and an incredibly funny aerobics session to Britney Spears’ Work Bitch.

Karlee Misi gave us a very sexy and somewhat precocious striptease while Eva managed a flawless suspended rope routine while being doused in rain – all of it was simply magical. I don’t like to pick favourites, but I’d give the edge to Malia Walsh with a remarkably energised and somewhat manic hula hoop routine that involved an audience member and a packet of marshmallows. The show ended with a superb rendition of the song Rhythm of Life which seemed to sum up this rather special night.

Smashed – The Nightcap is an uplifting, crazy sequin festooned night of fun, music and colour sure to leave a lasting impression.
