Review: The Lady Killers slay it in ‘DIVAS!’

For 20 years kiwi singers Tina Cross, Jackie Clarke and Suzanne Lynch have performed together under the group name The Lady Killers an apt name for this trio who know how to slay it on stage.

DIVAS! is their latest show and a tribute to the many, many women who have made a huge contribution to music over the past sixty or so years. From my own experience and clearly that of the audience, this evening was a roll call of the songs that have made an indelible impact on our lives.

The lady killers themselves are quite the team who harmonise so well together. This year, each of them also did some songs solo which enabled them to demonstrate their versatility and individualism.

Tina is dark, seductive, and oh so chic. She performed Lady Gaga and Whitney Houston hits in a style which evoked those divas but had her own unique soulfulness and depth.

Suzanne has both a touch of country grace and also an understated ‘rock chick’ vibe which is extremely charming. She brought a smouldering smokiness to Dusty Springfield’s Preacher Man and then a deeply emotional rendition of Adele’s Someone Like You.

Jackie has a natural flair for comedy and showmanship – in one case turning a slight wardrobe malfunction into a hilarious moment. But of course it is her beautiful voice that comes through in a sublime delivery of Nina Simone’s Feeling Good and a mind-blowing incarnation of Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights.

This really was an evening of memories with song after song so expertly delivered and dredging up happy moments from my entire life. It was definitely a reminder of the depth and breadth of talent and the extraordinary impact women have had on the global musical psyche.

The solo songs were fantastic, really fantastic, but listening to these women joining together to deliver medley after medley of artists such as Pink, Fleetwood Mac, Dolly Parton, ABBA and so many others was incredible.  Each one a crowd pleaser and all sounding as fresh as when they were first released.

Jackie, Tina and Suzanne are obvious friends with a deep and palpable rapport. Their talent, charm and connection to the audience ensured this event felt less like a concert and more like a  musical family reunion.
