Review: Cyrano is an odd film

This is a musical version of the classic story of Cyrano de Bergerac a man in love with a woman who’s out of his league.

It’s an odd yet engaging film. The acting is reasonably good, but the story is a little hackneyed, and about half an hour too long. As a musical, it’s kind of mediocre, many of the songs aren’t memorable, and are placed at odd times throughout the film. The characters seem to be out of sorts with one another because each performer is playing a different genre. Essentially the film doesn’t really know what it is, is it a drama, comedy, or what?

The biggest problem is it doesn’t explore Roxanne and Cyrano’s early past and why they became such good friends and also, how Cyrano’s love developed. The musical numbers seem tacked on, and the film would have been better without them, cutting its length and concentrating on character development.

So how did I score it?

Acting  7/10

Story/Script   5/10

Cinematography   7/10
