Movie Review: Speak No Evil

In this thriller, an American family  meets a British couple and their son  on vacation in Italy and they all seem to get on really well. The Brits invite the yanks to visit their farm for a weekend, and when they do, things start to to wrong.

Let me say this from the get go, James McAvoy is absolutely brilliant playing the at first friendly and funny Paddy. Watching him slowly transform into someone quite different is mesmerising. And trust me he gets very creepy. McAvoy’s fellow cast mates are excellent and together they create a very believable set of people.

The film however takes a very long time to get to the truly dramatic and quite scary parts of this story, and so spends a little too much time setting the scene. Around the one hour mark, I was getting restless.

The final half an hour however is pretty full on, and very tense with some very violent moments.

The strange thing about this film is that it while well performed and shot, I left the theatre actually wondering if this was a comedic spoof. Not sure why, but I’m keen to know what you think.

So how did I score it?

Acting  8 /10

Story/Script  7 /10

Cinematography   7 /10

Set/Costumes  7 /10

Entertainment value  7 /10

That gives Speak No Evil an average score of  7.2 / 10
