Movie Review: Saltburn is a flawed masterpiece

In this British movie, a socially awkward man called Oliver meets a charismatic and charming guy called Felix at Oxford University. The become friends and Felix invites Oliver to spend the summer at Saltburn, a mansion owned by his rather weird family.

So,, this is one freaky film in which all the characters are strange and quite unlikeable. As the story unfolds, there are some creepy and cringeworthy scenes.

The film has way too much smoking in it and occasionally the ‘quirkiness’ of the characters seems a little overdone.

One bugbear for me, and it’s typical in a lot of films is that the ‘gayest’ or most sexually fluid character is somewhat deranged. The straighter ones are weird, but not as deranged as the gay one – make of that what you will!

On the plus side, there are some very funny moments, and sharp dialogue and the cast are all quite amazing and give very believable performances.

All up, Saltburn is very watchable and for the most parts holds ones attention well  – i guess I’d have to call this movie a flawed masterpiece.

So how did I score it?

Acting  8 /10

Story/Script 7 /10

Cinematography    7/10

Set/Costumes 7/10

Entertainment   8 /10

That gives Saltburn  an average score of   7.4 / 10
