In this sci-fi comedy thriller, a young orphan called Cady is given an AI doll by her tech savvy aunt as a companion to help her get over the death of her parents. The problem is, M3GAN the robot doll develops some rather murderous ways of caring for Cady.
Press play to watch the review:
This is a quite slick and funny film, if sometimes a little predictable and slow in parts. The doll is creepy, and the psychological exploration of the impact of artificial intelligence on the human psyche is well done. There is violence, but it’s not gratuitous, and in the second half of the film, there is enough dramatic tension to keep you very anxious. The cast work well together, though some of the characters are a little two dimensional.
In some ways it’s hard to tell if the film is a genuine drama, horror story, or a parody of both genres, but it’s a lot of fun, and has a scintillating climax.
