The Monotone Era is a cutting edge double bill featuring two contemporary dance works Subclinical and 0essiah. You’ll take a look into two communities as they deal with their intrigues and individualisms. Indulge in the Era of being, this show will have you swinging between dream and reality through their utopian conceptualisation.
Jess Compton and Carla Harre work extremely well together. Freshly graduated from Unitec, the majority of their (extremely practical based) degree in Performing and Screen arts was taught via Zoom or with other Covid coping measures in place last year. Carla Harre mentioned that the pair “are really excited to present a show during this social climate. We are the next generation of artists – the ones who will creatively set the path for performance in the wake of Covid 19”. In 2020 the pair co-founded Jawline Dance Co, an Auckland based performance collective. The Monotone Era is the collective’s debut show and the first show the pair have made outside of an education environment. Through their work, they are aiming to create a healthy culture in the industry that places emphasis on integrity and understanding.
Jawline Dance Co has also been set up to create performances that are more accessible to new audiences. Jess Crompton says; “We want people to know that when you go to a dance show, it’s okay not to understand everything. There is quite a lot of feedback from our family and friends who aren’t dancers that they feel embarrassed not to understand how to translate the movement into a direct storyline. The Monotone Era has been created so that you can interpret your own narrative from the work, and seeks to allow people to be comfortable and enjoy trying a new theatre experience.”
The Monotone Era is choreographed by Jess Crompton and Carla Harre in collaboration with the performers; Jacob Reynolds, Sharvon Mortimer, Caleb Heke and Cecilia Wilcox. Not to be missed for new dance audiences, this show will take you on an exciting visual journey.
