What do you get when you cross a couple of talent-rich and eclectic improv troupes with two of New Zealand’s finest improv talents? You get the Mish Mash!
Featuring Auckland improv ensembles Love Lamp and Bull Rush, the show format was first performed in Chicago and is the brainchild of Steven Lyons, actor, improviser and comedian. It is presented by social enterprise and jack-of-all-trades of the arts Paper Goat.
Says Lyons, “We’re pumped to be back in the live arts scene again, particularly as Paper Goat is a social enterprise designed to create opportunities for New Zealand performers to not only develop their craft, but also to give audiences greater access to creative and engaging performances”
Teaming up with actor, improviser and performer Greg Ward, Lyons and Ward have individually performed around the world across their 20+ years of solo careers, sharing stages throughout the 2000’s and up to today, but The Mish Mash is their first foray as a true-blue Duo – and it’s something they see as both a creative joy – and a fabulous challenge.
“We’ve loved the times we’ve teamed up on stage” says Ward, “but it’s always been in the company of others, and you know, there’s often quite a safety net in that. As a duo, we only have each other to rely on – and living on that edge is where often the magic can be found.”
Supporting their headline act are established Auckland improv troupes, Love Lamp, known for cutting-edge performances incorporating stand-up comedians and Bull Rush, winner Best Comedy 2020 Whangarei Fringe and purveyors of guffaw-inducing improvised comedy, two groups whose different styles have garnered quite the dedicated and appreciative audiences over recent years.
