Bringing the laughs and the tears, ANTi is a new one-woman play written and performed by the award-winning Keagan Carr Fransch. This is a story of a family forced to meet at the intersection of queer love, religious expectations, tragic heroines, and Black womanhood.
ANTi plays at Basement Theatre this 27 – 31 August where two worlds are interwoven, Thebes and Tāmaki Makaurau, by the familiar thread of familial duty.
Behind the production is a powerhouse creative team: co-directors Dione Joseph (Po’ Boys & Oysters) and Sam Phillips (Losing Face), costume designer Natasha Ovely (The First Prime-Time Asian Sitcom), lighting designer Rae Longshaw-Park (Chrome Dome & Schizo), and composer Tawanda Manyimo (Loop Track).
The heart of ANTi is Keagan Carr Fransch, a true multi hyphenate artist: an accomplished director (seven methods of killing kylie jenner), dramaturg (Royal Court Theatre UK), trained actor (Toi Whakaari, Royal Central School of Speech & Drama), and Adam NZ Play award nominated playwright (Mitochondrial Eve).
The title is a double-entendre, nodding to the two tragic heroines helming the play: Antigone and Aunty. Only weeks away from taking to the stage, ANTi is a tour-de-force ready to grip and enthrall audiences. It is no surprise this is one of the most anticipated theatre shows of 2024.
Produced by Natalya Mandich-Dohnt (This Room is an Island) and assistant producer, Nour Malak. Presented by Black Creatives Aotearoa, a community arts organisation dedicated to supporting creatives of African and Afro-Caribbean heritage in Aotearoa, and Hand Pulled Collective, who bring stories from the community to the stage through visionary theatre-making.
